THE XL BEATDOWN

Reviews focused on beats that hit like a sucker punch. Raw, unapologetic commentary from Nevaworld’s toughest music critics.

BABii - SWEET TOOTH
4/10

"Sweet Tooth," the third single from BABii’s upcoming album DareDeviil2000, tries to deliver a reflection on indulgence and addiction but falls flat in its execution. Inspired by Fang, the notorious figure involved in Nevaworld’s illegal sugar trade, the song aims for a futuristic blend of weightless grime and post-club influences but ultimately feels more like a tired rehash of familiar sounds.

Lyrically, "Sweet Tooth" touches on the battle between desire and self-control, but lines like, "It’s true, sweet tooth, that you let me down," lack the emotional punch needed to make this theme hit hard. While the song attempts to mirror Fang’s storyline—his reckless sugar addiction and its consequences—it comes off as a shallow, predictable portrayal of overindulgence rather than a nuanced exploration of personal struggle.

Sonically, the track is cluttered with sci-fi beats and textured layers that seem more like a distraction than a cohesive sound. Compared to her earlier singles "J0YR1DE" and "Scarface," "Sweet Tooth" feels muted and lacks the energy that BABii's fans might expect. It comes across as more introspective, but not in a compelling way—more like it’s stuck in its own head, circling the same ideas without ever breaking out. Warpstr’s and Iglooghost’s production, while technically impressive, fails to elevate the track, leaving it feeling more generic than groundbreaking.

"Sweet Tooth" clearly isn’t the standout of the DareDeviil2000 rollout. Instead, it lingers in mediocrity, overshadowed by the stronger, more dynamic singles that preceded it. While it contributes to the album’s conceptual depth, it doesn’t do much to further the journey through Nevaworld. For those who have come to expect BABii’s signature boundary-pushing sound, "Sweet Tooth" feels more like a filler track than an essential piece of the narrative. In the end, "Sweet Tooth" tries to tap into the darker side of indulgence but misses the mark, leaving listeners with a track that’s forgettable at best.

BABii - SCARFACE
5/10

BABii's "Scarface" taps into grime influences, sprinkling them across her well-known electronic landscape in her latest track. Inspired by the tumultuous figure Cody Scar from the DD-2000 scandal, the song ambitiously seeks to merge gritty lyrical themes with ethereal musical elements, aiming for a fusion that is as intriguing as it is uneven.

The production from Pholo, Iglooghost and Warpstr starts off strong, with pulsating energy setting a compelling foundation. However, as BABii weaves in her signature sounds, the track struggles to maintain a cohesive sound. The blend of rawness with the polished aesthetics creates a sonic interplay that, while conceptually interesting, often feels more like a clash.

Lyrically, "Scarface" is direct and impactful, with lines like “Two time, Hook Wink, Two face, Double cross you” cutting sharply through the mix. These phrases effectively convey the narrative of betrayal and deception. However, the storytelling sometimes lacks depth, leaning on repetitive structures that risk feeling overly simplistic.

For BABii’s fans, "Scarface" offers a fresh, if somewhat experimental, addition to her repertoire, presenting a different facet of her musical identity.

Ultimately, "Scarface" earns a solid 5/10. It’s a track that pushes creative boundaries and speaks to BABii’s artistic bravery but falls short of realizing a fully integrated fusion of grime and her leftfield style. It’s an interesting listen and a noteworthy attempt at blending disparate elements, though it leaves room for refinement in both execution and stylistic coherence.

BABii - J0YR1D3
5/10

BABii’s latest single, "J0YR1D3," attempts to tackle some weighty personal themes but ultimately falls short in its execution. While there’s no doubt that BABii has approached the song with an intensely personal perspective, the end result feels more like a missed opportunity than a triumph.

Sonically, the track is a weightless blend of electronic, pop, and hip hop, but none of these elements seem to fully cohere. The sound design, though lush at times, feels aimless—there’s an airy lightness to the track that, instead of reinforcing the depth of the message, makes the entire production feel somewhat hollow. BABii’s sweet, almost saccharine vocals don’t help matters, either. While her voice is undoubtedly disarming, it feels mismatched with the gravity of the subject matter she’s trying to explore.

Thematically, BABii ventures into the unsettling territory of deepfake porn, using it as a metaphor for her disconnection from her own sexuality, shaped by her experiences as a survivor of childhood trauma. It’s a bold topic, and BABii deserves credit for confronting it. However, the song itself doesn’t quite deliver on this premise. The exploration of lust feels more surface-level than introspective, and the connection between deepfake porn and her personal narrative is tenuous at best. What could have been a raw, emotional dive into a painful experience instead feels like it never quite finds its footing.

"J0YR1D3" could have been a powerful statement, but instead, it struggles to find a balance between its ambitious themes and lackluster production. While BABii’s personal story is undoubtedly compelling, the track itself doesn’t quite do it justice. In a sea of bold, boundary-pushing pop, this one sinks under the weight of its own potential.
